I have a patient in her 30s, a single mom and works in a corporation. When she visited me the first time, she looked like she was in her higher forties!I instantly realised that her dark circles were making her look aged and tired. Dark Circles often tend to age the appearance of a person more than the wrinkles or gray hair. She consulted me for her hair fall but when I pointed out her dark circles, she ignored the issue and blamed it on her sleepless nights and life style. She was convinced that there is nothing anyone can do about her dark circles as she cannot change her lifestyle!
Dark circles these days are a major concern for almost all age groups starting from teenage to old age. And most of us do not know that almost everyone gets dark circles under their eyes from time to time. Dark circles under eyes areusually temporary and not a medical concern.The skin around the eye is extremely delicate. Several factors ranging from allergies to mental stress can easily affect this part of the skin to produce dark circles.Dark circles develop due to the pigmentation of skin in the orbital area, but most factors aggravate the dark circles and do not cause them.

- Lack of sleep
A lack of sleep can make skin appear more pale, which allows blood vessels to be more visible through the skin, giving the appearance of bluish or dark circles.

Certain medication and also liver and kidney problems could cause dark circles under the eyes.
Iron deficiency anemia may cause a bluish tinge below the eyes.
Lack of balanced diet is a common cause of dark circles. A healthy and nutritious diet rich in vitamins like A, C, K, E and nutrients can help to get rid of dark circles.
- Exposure to sun
Too much exposure to sun weakens the thin skin around the eye area causing dark circles.
Dark circles under the eyes run in families. They tend to be more noticeable in people with fair skin or deep-set eyes.
The skin under the eyes is thin and delicate to begin with. As we age, teskin and the fat pad under the eyes becomes thinner, causing blood vessels to become noticeable. This thins and relaxes the skin around the eyes and gives the appearance of dark circles. Sun damage can make it worse because it weakens the skin.

As there are many causes of dark circles, there are many different ways to treat them as well. Only dark circles that are caused due to heredity are difficult to treat. Otherwise dark circles can be very easily & safely lightened & treated with peels, laser, revitalising eye treatments and fillers.

Home remedies for Dark Circles Under the Eyes
- Drink plenty of fluids, at least 2 liters of water a day to keep the skin smooth and supple.
- Eat healthy nutritional diet. Include dairy products in your diet and consume green vegetables and fruits in your daily diet.
- Potato juice has bleaching agents in it. Soak cotton balls in the juice and can keep them on your eyes for at least 20 minutes.
- Grated cucumber juice is very useful for dark circles. You can apply it around the eyes the same way you apply potato juice.
- Tea water too reduces the puffiness and dark circles of the eyes and rejuvenates the eyes by refreshing them. You can boil tea in water and restrain the leaves. You can refrigerate this water in the freezer to make ice cubes. Keep these ice cubes on the eyes in a cotton cloth for 20 minutes.
- Always go out in sun wearing sunglasses and after applying sunscreen lotion on the skin around the eyes.
